If you already own an HM-5, you can upgrade your device to an HM-6 and take advantage of its WiFi connectivity to remotely read the Hive Monitor.

You will need to purchase an HM-5 to HM-6 Booster Kit from Solutionbee for the hardware.  After that, just follow the instructions on the phone app and the instructions given in this article.

Steps:

Before you begin, make sure you have received the HM-5 to HM-6 Booster Kit from Solutionbee.  It looks like this:

The kit has an electronic assembly that has been previously programmed and configured.  It is ready to be installed as is.   Just make sure you have a good Phillips screwdriver with you when you start the conversion.

1.) The electronic module consists of the smaller cover that includes the PCB and the lower portion that is essentially empty.  The lower portion will not be used, you will not remove the one on the existing HM-5.  Only the top portion, with the new PCB, will replace the old HM-5 top cover with the PCB.  We ship the new HM-6 bottom cover only to provide protection during shipping.

2.) On the HM-5, lift the front label corners to reveal four screws.  Using a Phillips screwdriver, carefully loosen the screws with a few turns on each screw.  It isn't necessary to remove the screws completely - a few turns of each screw is sufficient to loosen the top cover.

Note: Take care not to strip the screws with the screwdriver.

3.) Lift the top cover of the HM-5 module which includes the PC board.

Unplug the load cell cable connector attached to the PC board (the one with four leads).

Remove the battery and the battery holder from the bottom portion of the enclosure to which it is connected.

Important Note 1: The bottom enclosure of the HM-5 module is  NOT removed or replaced.  You may clean the edges to make sure that there is a good seal between the new top enclosure and the old bottom enclosure.

Important Note 2: Sometimes the HM-5 battery and battery holder easily pops out (even upon opening the module), sometimes you need a screwdriver to pry out the battery holder.

4.  Take the top cover of the new HM-6 hardware and attach the battery cable connector to it.  Place the battery inside the old bottom part of the enclosure.  The battery will lay loosely in the bottom part of the enclosure - it will not have a battery holder to hold it in place.

Note the polarity of the battery connector!

5.  Attach the load cell cable connector to the top cover of the PCB.

Note the polarity of the load cell connector!

6. You may discard the new HM-6 bottom enclosure as it is not needed.  With the new battery tucked inside the enclosure, attach the new top cover (the part with the PCB) onto the old bottom enclosure.  Tighten the four screws.

7.) Attach the supplied label to the front of the enclosure.

8. Start the B-ware Android app.  From the Monitor List, read your upgraded now-HM-6.  Tap on the monitor you just read to reveal the functional menu.

9. Select the "Calibration" icon.

10. Make sure you have something with a known weight that will be used for the calibration.  For example:

Follow calibration instructions on the app which will both zero the scale and calibrate it.

11.  Enjoy your HM-6!
